About this place
The Brandenburg Gate in Berlin is a neoclassical triumphal arch and one of Germany's most famous landmarks. It stands on the western side of Pariser Platz in the Mitte district, marking the end of the historic boulevard Unter den Linden. The gate was built between 1789 and 1793 by order of King Frederick William II of Prussia, based on designs by the architect Carl Gotthard Langhans. The Quadriga, the sculpture that crowns the gate, was created from a design by the sculptor Johann Gottfried Schadow. To the west of the Brandenburg Gate lies the expansive Tiergarten park, which is crossed by the Straße des 17. Juni. The square immediately west of the gate is known as Platz des 18. März.
