The Church of St Ioannes Naukleros in Kos Town was built in the early 15th century and originally dedicated to St John the Baptist (the patron saint of the Knights of St John who ruled the island at that time). The church became ruinous and, in 1943, it was moved and restored. In 1947 it was rededicated to Koan martyr St Ioannes Naukleros ("The Boatswain"). Iannes was "bewitched" by the Turks on the island and converted to Islam. He subsequently renounced Islam and asserted his Christian faith, which he continued to do from jail following his arrest by the Turks who then sentenced him to death by fire.
