St Mary The Virgin, Salcott-cum-Virley. The tower and porch date from the 15th century; however, the body of the church was rebuilt after the 1884 Great Colchester Earthquake. This tremor is estimated to have been 6.9 on the Richter scale, one of the most destructive quakes ever recorded in the UK. Nearby Virley church, also dedicated to St Mary, was never rebuilt - see http://website.lineone.net/~tolin/Pictures/SalcottVilrleyRuins.htm this is in square TL9413
