Ruins of Church of St Andrew

The ruins of St Andrew's church - the south-west corner This ruined church is very difficult to find and even more diffcult to access. Perched above Whitlingham Lane and the River Yare, surrounded by tall trees and very much overgrown by ivy, it is hemmed in on the other side by the busy A47 southern bypass road. The whole northern part of the building appears to have fallen down the slope and its round tower collapsed in 1940. Apparently there have been attempts to preserve the ruin if only as an aesthetic focal point since Whitlingham was a favourite romantic walking spot in the 18th century. What remains to-date is the south chancel wall and part of the south nave wall none of which can be discerned at this time of the year. See > 119824 for comparison - this is an image taken two years ago in January with the vegetation not near as dense as it is in July.
