St Bartholomew's Church and Round Tower at Kinneigh Overlooking St Bartholomew's C of I parish church and graveyard, is the unique round tower of Kinneigh, the only surviving building of an early monastery. It was built sometime during the C11, and is unique in Ireland, as apart from its great age (1000 years), it is the only example of a round tower with a hexagonal base. Round towers were prominent in many Irish monasteries, and were in use primarily as bell towers. They may well have had a secondary use as a store for relics, or even used for defensive purposes during times of unrest. The tower would originally have been capped with a pointed conical roof.
