St. John Chrysostom Melkite Catholic Church

St. John Chrysostom Melkite Catholic Church on Ponce de Leon Avenue in Atlanta, seen here, did not begin as a church. Before its "present and holy utilization," as described on the church's website, the building was the home of Coca-Cola magnate Asa Griggs Candler. Built in 1916 at a cost of $210,000, it remained in the Candler family long after his death in 1929. After years of being rented out and used as boarding home, the structure was bought in 1946 by the American Legion with the intention of using it for their state headquarter, a plan which did not materialize. Atlanta's small Melkite Catholic Community purchased the former Candler mansion in 1957 for $62,000. It took more than $250,000, though, "to transform it, as much as possible, into the beginning of a proper Byzantine house of worship."
