Lake View's longtime residents may not approve of the changes in their neighborhood over the last 50 or so years. But if they want to see wholesale destruction, they should come to the south side, where churches, homes and apartment buildings just like these were bulldozed and, in most cases, simply left as vacant lots. No wonder so many schools on the south and west sides are half empty. And just for the record, it doesn't make any economic sense to keep half empty schools open for old-times sake. Some of them are going to have to be closed and consolidated, just as the Catholic schools have had to do for the past 50 years, as attendance at city schools has dwindled.
